Opera

"Kleider machen Leute" is the title of Joseph Suder’s opera. He approximately wrote it between 1926 and 1934, but due to World War II it was not performed until 1964 in Coburg. The lyrics go back to Gottfried Keller’s same-named short story and were drafted by the composer himself. He left the basic storyline the way it is in the “Betrüger wider Willen” but then added dramaturgic, socio-critical and more psychological elements to the originally only cheerful-ironic atmosphere. In Suder’s opera the poor tailor-journeyman possesses a strong artistic talent that expresses itself in a virtuous violin solo and turns into an important component of the exaggeration of Keller’s bourgeois “Happy End”. Single pieces of the opera, especially the dramatically very important ballet music, were often performed.
